2.1.3 Phase 3: Configuration Management
Basics
Once needs and objectives are identified, the focus shifts to developing or configuring the software solution(s). This may entail adopting existing packages, creating custom solutions, or integrating multiple applications. Emphasis in this stage is placed on ensuring compatibility with existing systems, conducting comprehensive testing, and collaborating with stakeholders to tailor the software to organizational needs.

Information
Identifying Hardware, Inventory, and Connectivity
In this phase, the IT team conducts an inventory of all hardware to be deployed, ensuring all devices are accounted for and are connected to the network.
Configuration
The configuration step involves setting up deployment tools and ensuring devices meet the necessary requirements for the software. System Administrators most often lead this phase, with Level 1 Technicians assisting.
Image Creation
Creating a master image of the operating system and essential software for deployment is critical. System Administrators generally handle image creation, with Level 1 Technicians assisting in testing and refining the image in the next phase.
Security and Compliance Considerations
Data Protection. Measures are implemented to protect student and staff data.
Software Compliance. Ensure all software deployed is properly licensed and compliant with legal requirements.
Access Controls. Manage access controls, or levels of access based on different user profiles, to restrict sensitive data and applications.
Level 1 Technicians may be asked to support configuration management by:
Conducting physical checks of devices and updating inventory records to ensure that all devices are accounted for and properly assigned;
Ensuring devices are properly enrolled in management systems (Intune, Google Workspace, Apple School Manager); and
Performing initial configuration tasks, such as setting up user accounts and installing basic software using tools like Microsoft Intune, Google Workspace, or Apple School Manager.
Task/Self-Assessment
Complete the following task or self-assessment:
You should understand and feel comfortable with your department’s inventory process and resources. Take time to confirm that you can identify hardware assets across your school or district and which are connected to your network at any given time. What is your district’s policy for pursuing devices that have not connected in a while? How will you be sure all devices are included in any upcoming software deployments?
