Being Responsible
Overview
It is very important that students learn early on to respect the device they are working on as well as be safe when they are using it. The teacher and students will have a classroom discussion on responsibility on how to take care of the device, keep it safe and themselves while using it.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Be able to keep their device safe.
- Be able to put their device away safely.
- Be able to log off and turn off the device.
- Understand to stay safe that they should only stay on teacher approved sites.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary Words:
- Device: A device is a piece of computer hardware equipment
- Safety: Safety is the condition of being protected.
Pre-planning
To prepare for this lesson:
- The teacher will watch the video Taking Care of Your Chromebook. This video even though it is for Chromebooks works across all devices.
- Watch this video if your students have iPads. There are many good rules to keep it safe.
- Decide which program you would like to use to capture the student's thoughts. The following are good tools for capturing ideas on the fly.
- Google Keep
- Google Docs
- The teacher will need to decide if there should be a follow-up activity after the lesson to determine whether or not students have learned responsibility.
- The students will draw and/or write what they have learned in the lesson.
- The students will type what they remember into a notetaking app like Google Keep or Google Docs/Word.

Steps
Directions for this activity:
- The teacher will have the students watch either the Chromebook or iPad video.
- The teacher will have the students recollect what they learned in a group discussion after they have watched the video.
- The teacher can use a tool like Google Keep or Google Docs to capture thoughts.
- For device care, students should remember that:
- The device must be kept clean.
- Hands must be clean when using the device.
- Nothing should be set on the device.
- They must always know where their device is.
- Don't leave it on the floor where it can be stepped on.
- The device should be kept charged.
- Food and drink should not be eaten or drunk when using the device.
- To take care when the device is being carried.
- If there is something wrong with the device, tell the teacher right away.
- To keep safe students should remember:
- Stay on approved sites.
- Keep their password protected.
- Log off when done.
Assessment Options
Different options for assessing the students:
- Observations
- Check for understanding
- The teacher will need to decide if there should be a follow-up activity after the lesson to determine whether or not students have learned responsibility.
- The students will draw and/or write what they have learned in the lesson.
- The students will type what they remember into Bubbl.us or Popplet.
