Overview

A digital footprint is a trail of data you create while using the Internet. In includes the websites you visit, emails you send, and information you submit to online services. Students will be learning what a digital footprint is, how it is created from activity on the web, and ways to be online and create a positive footprint.

Students will:

  • Know and understand what is a digital footprint.
  • Learn what it means to have a digital footprint.
  • Learn how to create a positive digital footprint.

Vocabulary Words:

  • Digital footprint: Information posted online by yourself or others about things you are interested in, or do online.
  • Permanent: Permanent is lasting forever, cannot be deleted or erased.
  • Audience: An audience is people that you may or may not know that can see information by and about you, your photos, comments, and posts. 

To prepare for this lesson the teacher will need to

Directions for this activity:

  1. Use this emaze provided OR
  2. Open a discussion that includes questions such as:
  • How many of you have an iPad/smartphone?
  • How many of you text? message?
  • Do you have an account for Snapchat? Instagram? YouTube? Facebook?

3. Discuss how posting pictures, posts in chatrooms, online in social media leaves a digital footprint.

4. Show this video about digital footprints (Common sense media)

5. Have students brainstorm and call out what a digital footprint is while you write it so they can see it (computer with digital display, whiteboard, poster paper)

6. Ask students to list together what to do to have a "good digital footprint" and show this YouTube video.
 

Different options for assessing the students:

MITECS: Michigan adopted the "ISTE Standards for Students" called MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.

Digital Citizen
2a. Students cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.
2d. Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation online.
