Prodigy

Overview

Prodigy is an online curriculum aligned math practice website. Students complete math tasks and earn play time which is in a video game format. It is an adaptive math program. There is both a free and premium version. 

Students will:

  • Know how to use the Prodigy game to complete math tasks and interact with other students.
  • Be able to complete math tasks that have been assigned by the teacher.
  • Understand that in order to earn play time they must complete the math tasks.

Vocabulary Words:

  1. Username: The username is a name used to sign into account.

  2. Password: A password is a secret word or phrase that must be used to gain admission to something.

To prepare for this lesson:

  • Teacher should sign up for the free account on www.prodigygame.com and select “Get Your Free Account”.

  • Select teacher option.

  • If you are not using Google, provide your full name, e-mail address, and the password you would like to use for the account and click the "Create Account" button.

  • If you sign into (or are already signed into) a Google account on this browser with only one email associated with it, you’ll be automatically moved to the next step.

  • Click on "I want a new Prodigy account".

  • Select “Teacher” and complete the information needed.

  • Students will begin with a placement assessment.

  • All student results are placed on the teacher dashboard.

  • The teacher has the option to assign skills on the teacher planner.

  • Students under 13 years of age will need parental permission to use Prodigy.

Directions for this activity:

  1. The teacher will introduce the students to the Prodigy website. Explain how they will choose a character name for their "Wizard Character" and how they will progress through the different Prodigy worlds. 

  2. Students navigate to Prodigy.

  3. Have the students select the “Play Prodigy” button in the upper right-hand portion of their browser window.

  4. Enter the child/student’s username and password.

  5. Select the “Login” button. The game will begin to load automatically.

  6. Explain to the students how they can battle with each other to see who can get the most problems right. 

Different options for assessing the students:

  • Observations
  • Check for understanding
  • Prodigy provides the teacher with individual student and class data. This can allow the teacher to assign specific skills to students.

MITECS: Michigan adopted the "ISTE Standards for Students" called MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.

1a. Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
1b. Students build networks and customize their learning environments in ways that support the learning process.
1c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
1d. Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.

Prodigy will work on most platforms as long as they have been kept up-to-date with the latest operating system.
