Pre-planning
To prepare for this lesson:
- This is a culminating activity that follows your discussion of what it means to be a good digital citizen. Students will need to have a grasp of positive digital citizenship and understand its importance.
- Take a look at this Common Sense Media Lesson. It can provide you with a valuable lesson in good citizenship.
- Here is one that would tie in with this activity. Be a Super Digital Citizen | Common Sense Education.
- Here are some videos to use to explain positive digital citizenship.
- Students will need a computer with internet access.
- Students could also complete a hand-drawn draft before the technology piece, depending on time.
- It is suggested that you create your superhero first before teaching the class. Decide where students can access this example (LMS, digital folder, etc).
- If you do not have an account yet for Adobe Express for Education, you will want to create one. You will be able to add your students and give them a code to access the program.
- Here are instructions for students.
- Here is a video tutorial with directions to get you started on creating a Superhero.
- Decide whether or not to use this rubric with this student. You may make a copy and modify it if you wish.

2. Introduce the idea of a digital citizen superhero who helps others use technology responsibly. Have the students watch the video examples.
3. Show examples of digital citizen superheroes and discuss their characteristics.
4. Open the Adobe Express example and display it to the students to give them an idea of what they should be creating.
5. Demonstrate how to create the superhero. This video tutorial will help them with the steps in Adobe Express.
6. Click on REMIX- this will give each learner a new copy.
- To change the image, click on the IMAGE, then on the top right-hand side, click on AI Generator.
- A text box will appear on the left, allowing students to customize their superhero's appearance.
- Students can provide details such as hair and eye color, style, outfit color, and what they want their hero to hold; the more specific, the better.
- Students can also change the font color and style on the poster.
- To share the superhero, have students download the design to their computer and then share it in the designated area set by the teacher.
