XtraMath

Empowered Learner

Overview

Xtramath is a website/app that teachers can use with students to practice math fact fluency. Teachers can make a free account, add classes and students, and track student progress. Students start by answering addition problems within a set amount of time, then move on to subtraction, multiplication, and division once they have shown mastery. The teacher can set the time students have to correctly solve each problem.

Students will:

  • will be able to practice and show mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts using the Xtramath app on their Chromebooks.

Vocabulary Words:

  1. Addition: The process of combining two or more groups of objects or numbers together to find the total amount
  2. Subtraction: Subtraction is taking one number away from another to find out how many are left or how far apart they are
  3. Multiplication: Multiplication is a fast way to add the same number multiple times, known as repeated addition.
  4. Division: Division is the process of sharing a total amount equally among smaller, equal groups, or determining how many smaller groups fit into a larger number.

To prepare for this lesson:

  •  Create a free Xtramath account
  • Add students to a class and print their login info
  • Give students their login information
  • Watch the video: Getting Started with XtraMath
  • See the Accommodations Page and Charts on the 21things4student website in the Teacher Resources.
  • Math manipulatives for lower students
  • Set the timer for a longer period of time

Directions for this activity:

  1. The teacher will introduce the four basic math operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and discuss the importance of fact fluency.

  2. Share the video Getting Started with XtraMath: A Student Introduction with students.

  3. Provide students with their login info.

  4. The students will practice their math facts throughout the year as they learn them.

  5. Optional: The teacher will print out certificates for students as they show mastery of each operation and track student progress.

Different options for assessing the students:

  • Observations
  • Check for understanding
  • The teacher will be able to monitor students' performance on the app. The website shows which operations students have mastered and lets teachers view students' answers daily. The teacher can then work on problems that students answered incorrectly with them.

MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students): Michigan adopted a state-wide version of the "ISTE Standards for Students" and named them MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.

To learn more about MITECS, visit the State of Michigan's TechPlan.org website for definitions and support documents to assist you in the classroom.
