Michigan Student Data Privacy Alliance

What is the Michigan Student Data Privacy Alliance?

The Michigan Student Data Privacy Alliance, a statewide initiative designed to standardize and streamline data privacy protections for K-12 students across Michigan. The initiative addresses the growing challenge school districts face in managing hundreds of educational technology vendor agreements while ensuring compliance with federal privacy regulations including FERPA and COPPA.

How can the Michigan STudent Data Privacy Alliance benefit Districts?

The REMC Association of Michigan is establishing a statewide Alliance membership with SDPC to create a comprehensive student data privacy management system that will:

  • Establish a centralized clearinghouse for student data privacy agreements.
  • Implement standardized Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) protocols aligned with federal guidelines.
  • Reduce administrative burden and legal costs for individual districts by 30%.
  • Create a shared repository of vendor privacy agreements accessible to all Michigan districts.

What is the student data privacy consortium (SDPC)?

The Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) is a national collaborative of schools, districts, regional and state agencies, policy makers, and marketplace providers addressing real-world, adaptable and implementable solutions to privacy concerns. Established in 2015, SDPC operates as a Special Interest Group under the Access 4 Learning (A4L) Community.

How can school districts get involved?

The Michigan Student Data Privacy Alliance is open to all school districts in Michigan. The project is fully operational and utilizes the Student Data Privacy Agreement (SDPA) version 2.1 from the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) and Access 4 Learning (A4L).
