INTRODUCTION
Social Networks and Chatbots: As you interact with your online community you may meet and use Chatbots, or perhaps you have already encountered them. It is important to understand what a Chatbot is, a bit about how they are created and programmed to seem so human-like. and if the information they provide might be biased, incomplete, or inaccurate.
Questions: Why are chatbots designed to sound so human-like, and how can they impact our everyday lives? Could the information a chatbot provides be biased, incomplete, or inaccurate? Use your critical thinking skills as you learn more about a Chatbot.
Chatbots Lesson: The activities and videos for the Step 2 and Step 3 pages are part of the Commonsense.org AI Literacy lesson resources for grades 6-12.
Lesson Objectives:
- Define what AI chatbots are and how they work.
- Understand why AI chatbots are intentionally designed to sound like people.
- Reflect upon the potential impacts of AI chatbots in our lives.
Steps
1. Copy or download the Student Handout (Designing AI Chatbots 2-part Active Viewing Guide)
2. Open the slideshow (to share with the entire class) for discussion and an introduction (Slideshow: Grades 6-12 - AI Literacy - AI Chatbots: Who's Behind the Screen)
- Slide 8 directs students to refer to and use the Student Handout.

- Continue with the Slideshow and directions to complete Part 2 of the student handout, and end with Slide 19.
