13. Dig the Data

Introduction

The word Dig can be a metaphor for thinking through a problem or issue or figuring something out so that you can make a decision based on your findings. In this Thing you will dig through the Quests to collect, organize and analyze data.

This Thing contains ten Quests. You will learn to create spreadsheets and charts, use formulas, and make decisions based on data. Dig In!

 QUESTS 1-5: PARTY PLANNER

Quests 1-5 will begin with the basics of creating a spreadsheet to plan a party. You will then move on to advanced skills including charting and formulas.

QUEST 6: SPINOUT

You will be using an interactive spinner to collect color data and create a visual to represent your findings.

 QUEST 8: WHISKERS

You will analyze data on cell phone plans for voice and text messaging using a Box and Whiskers plot and create a creative advertisement to convince others that your analysis of national data represents the best phone plan.

 QUEST 9: CHANGES OVER TIME

You will learn how data is collected about the state you live in and other states in the US, the increasing or decreasing populations in certain states, where most people live in the US, and how to interpret graphic representations of data that may inform things such as career choices.

 QUEST 10: SORT IT OUT

You are going to manage the music for the DJ before the party begins. Your job is to sort the music in several ways and create a playlist.
