Step 1: Play the 7 Elements in 4 Minutes YouTube (4:00) to discover:

  • The seven elements of a digital story.
  • How to tell a compelling story.

Step 2: Remember the elements as you play the Lion and the Woodcutter example of a Fictional Narrative digital story in Step 3.



Step 3: Play the"Lion and the Woodcutter" and the Art of Storytelling YouTube (1:45).

Step 4: After playing the video, use the discussion questions provided below to discuss each of the different elements of the story.

7 Elements of a Digital Story

1. Point of View: What is the point of the story? From whose perspective is the story being told? Who do you think this digital story is written for? 

2. Message: What is the main point of the story? Is there a dramatic question or something that grabs your attention right away? 

3. Emotional Content: Does it include emotional content?

4. Voice (if present): Are there inflections by the narrator that give extra meaning to the story?

5. Music and sound effects (if present): Do the sound effects give additional meaning to the story? Give an example.

6. Pacing: How is pacing used in the flow of the story?  How does it enhance the message and keep the interest of the audience?

7. Economy: How are the visual elements used to add meaning to the message? Is the length of the story within the suggested time limit (2-4 minutes generally)?

Additional considerations: 

  • What medium was used to tell the story? (e.g., slide show, video, animation, narration, still images, etc.) Do you think the medium used was adequate for the type of story? Explain.

  • If you were to rewrite the story's ending, what would you change and why?
    Imagine a different conclusion for the Lion and the Woodcutter. How would your version alter the message of the story?
