Q3 Scams: Email

19. Buyer Beware
The video below guides you through the process of figuring out if an email is a scam. While playing the video How to Spot a Scam Email (7:34 min.), you might want to jot down some important tips.

Spot the Scam

Step 1. Use this 19.Q2 Scams Spotting Email Document and work alone or with a partner. Your mission - find all the red flags that show the email is fake or part of a scam.

Step 2. Based on what you learned in Quest Two about advertising and this one about scams, work in a small group to create your own scam.

  • Create a poster (infographic, drawing, or as suggested by your teacher) to advertise your scam to your classmates.
  • Then present your scam to the class for feedback for a vote on the best scam.

Step 3. Hackers: Now that you know about scams, what about hackers?  Play the PBS video "The Secret Lives of Hackers" from Nova Labs ( Direct Link 3:01 min.) to learn more about it. Have a small group or class discussion:

  • Have you or do you know of anyone who has been the subject of hacking?
  • What do you think you should do if you think you or a family member are being hacked?
