Q3 Order in the Clue Room: Filtering

13. Data Detectives

Finding Clues with Filters

Next task to complete in making sense of the sticky note on the folder that said, "What's in Row 10?" and the instructions document that was in the folder of spreadsheets that stated to sort and filter, is to learn how to filter the spreadsheets.

Step 1. Play the video below that provides instructions on how to add a filter view.  The video is specifically on Google Sheets.  Those who are using Microsoft Excel, don't fret, the steps are basically the same.  This video is for you, PC Quick Tip 2 - Filtering Data in Excel (0:59 min.).

  • Jot down notes while the video is playing.

Step 2. Go to your 13. Data Detective Notebook that you have saved in your 21T4S Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder. On slide 6, Q3 Order in the Classroom: Filtering, in your own words, write down the steps you need to do to create a filter view in a spreadsheet.

Step 3. Now that you have learned how to create a filter view in a spreadsheet, it is time to practice. Recall the last instruction from the document in 13. DD Spreadsheet Folder had to do with filtering? Let's see if that helps with finding some clues.

  • Return to the Birthday Data Collection Spreadsheet, that you created, in your 21T4S Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder and complete the filtering.

Step 4. Return to your 13. Data Detective Notebook that you have saved in your 21T4S Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder. Again, on slide 6, reflect back on the clues so far.  What do you notice based on the filtering of your Birthday Data Collection Spreadsheet? Write down your observations.
