buyer beware

Q2 Ad Creator: Vocabulary

19. Buyer Savvy

Key Vocabulary

Advertisement: An advertisement is a paid message created to convince people to buy a product, use a service, or believe an idea.

Affiliate Link: An affiliate link is a special link a creator shares that earns them a small payment every time someone clicks it and buys something.

Bias: Bias means that one is leaning toward one side, which can make a review or opinion less fair — for example, being paid by the company whose product you're reviewing.

Disclosure: Disclosure means to tell your audience clearly and up front that you were paid, given free products, or otherwise rewarded for featuring something.

Endorsement: An endorsement is when a person publicly recommends a product, suggesting they use it and believe in it.

FTC (Federal Trade Commission): The FTC is a U.S. government agency that protects shoppers from false advertising and unfair business practices, and that sets the disclosure rules creators must follow.

Influencer: An influencer is a creator with an audience large enough that companies will pay them to feature products.

Persuasion Technique: A persuasion technique is a specific strategy an advertiser uses to change how you feel about a product, such as making it look popular, exclusive, or urgently needed.

Slogan: A slogan is a short, memorable phrase a company repeats so you connect a feeling with their brand.

Sponsorship: A sponsorship is an arrangement where a company gives a creator money, products, or services in exchange for featuring their brand.

Target Audience: The target audience is a specific group of people an advertiser is trying to reach, chosen by age, interests, location, or habits.

Testimonial: A testimonial is a statement from a real person — a customer, an expert, or a celebrity — saying a product worked for them.

Puffery: Puffery is an exaggerated bragging that's too vague to prove or disprove, like "the world's most amazing snack." It's legal because nobody could reasonably take it as a fact.

Weasel Words: Weasel words are small words that quietly shrink a big claim — "helps," "up to," "may," "starting at" — so the ad sounds stronger than what the company actually promised.
